I like to kick off the new year with a smoothie or two to help reset after the holidays — and who doesn’t love a delicious, healthy smoothie?

Each of my smoothie recipes usually has a theme: immunity-boosting, digestion-supporting, anti-inflammatory, healthy gut, aphrodisiac — and now it’s time to focus on liver support.

Why is Liver Function Important?

It may not be glamorous, but the liver plays a vital role in overall health. We often forget about internal organs when making everyday food choices, yet the liver handles many essential tasks: storing vitamins, minerals and glycogen; filtering toxins from the bloodstream; producing bile to digest fats and metabolize hormones; balancing proteins, fats and sugars; and clearing out old red blood cells.

Signs Your Liver Needs Help:

When the liver isn’t functioning optimally, other systems send signals. Common signs include bloating, gas, constipation, heartburn or reflux, difficulty losing weight, chronic fatigue, anxiety or depression, and excessive sweating. Liver dysfunction isn’t only linked to alcohol — poor diet, processed foods, certain medications, autoimmune conditions, and nutrient deficiencies can all contribute.

Giving your liver a break by eating foods that support its processes can improve how your whole body functions. This smoothie combines ingredients selected for their liver-supporting and anti-inflammatory properties.

How to Support Your Liver:

Step one is to reduce processed foods and replace them with whole, anti-inflammatory choices. The ingredients in this smoothie help flush toxins, supply antioxidants, and nourish your organs so they’re not overburdened.

If you’re using a smoothie as a meal replacement, adding a clean protein powder helps make it more balanced and satisfying.

Protein Powder:

For this recipe I used hemp protein powder to give a plant-based protein boost. I prefer powders with a single ingredient — no added sweeteners or artificial flavors. Hemp blends well into smoothies and can be added to baked goods, pancakes, or oatmeal. Other unflavored options that work well here are goat whey or egg white protein.

I researched foods known to support liver function and included many of my favorites in this smoothie: green apple, carrot, banana, walnuts, spinach, parsley, fresh lemon juice, fresh turmeric, a pinch of cinnamon and almond milk.

Ingredients for Liver Detox Smoothie:

Green Apples: A good source of pectin, which helps cleanse and remove toxins from the digestive tract, easing the liver’s workload.

Carrots: Rich in plant flavonoids and beta-carotene, carrots support overall liver function.

Bananas: Provide potassium, important for liver and cardiovascular health. Sweet potato is an even richer potassium source if you prefer to swap it in.

Walnuts: Contain glutathione and omega-3s and help the liver process ammonia. Grinding or blending walnuts makes them easier to digest.

Parsley: High in vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll and antioxidants that support liver and kidney function.

Lemon Juice: Vitamin C helps convert toxins into water-soluble compounds the body can eliminate.

Turmeric: A potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that supports enzymes involved in flushing dietary toxins. Pair with a pinch of black pepper to enhance absorption.

Spinach: Leafy greens are rich in chlorophyll and help neutralize heavy metals, chemicals and pesticides while protecting the liver.

Cinnamon: Adds flavor and supports blood sugar and circulation; a small pinch enhances the smoothie without overpowering it.

Foods That Detoxify Your Liver:

Other liver-supporting foods not included in this smoothie are papaya, beets, artichoke, asparagus, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, lime, avocado, green tea, grapefruit and garlic. Feel free to experiment by adding papaya, beets, avocado, kale or grapefruit to adjust flavor and benefits.

Additional liver-support strategies include drinking raw vegetable juice (leafy greens and beet juice), ensuring adequate B vitamins, vitamin C and iron, and considering supplements like milk thistle or dandelion as needed.

Recipe Adaptations:

  • If you’re intolerant to banana, swap in 1/2 cup papaya or 1/4–1/2 cup cooked, cooled sweet potato.
  • Sweet potato is an excellent potassium source and makes a great banana substitute.
  • Omit protein powder if you don’t need it or choose a different clean protein powder.
  • For more sweetness, add 2–3 pitted Medjool dates.
  • If you dislike apple texture in smoothies, you can omit the apple.
  • Replace almond milk with oat, cashew, coconut milk, or orange juice for a sweeter, tropical flavor.

Whether you indulged over the holidays or simply want to be proactive, being mindful of your body’s systems helps maintain long-term health.

This smoothie fills, nourishes, detoxifies and revitalizes — pour it into a pretty glass, sip and enjoy the feeling of giving your liver a supportive boost.

Liver Detox Smoothie with apples, parsley, hemp protein, lemon, turmeric, and more — a nutrient-rich blend designed to support liver function and reduce inflammation.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe banana, peeled*
  • 1/2 green apple, cored and chopped
  • 1 medium-sized carrot, peeled and chopped
  • 1 handful baby spinach
  • 1 (1/4-inch) nub turmeric root, peeled
  • 1 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 3 walnut halves
  • 2 Tbsp Hemp Protein Powder, or protein powder of choice
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 pinch cinnamon, optional
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk, see note**
  • 1 pinch black pepper, ***

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until completely smooth. Taste and adjust with more cinnamon or a touch of honey if desired.

Notes

*Replace the banana with 1/2 cup chopped papaya if you’re intolerant to banana; papaya supports digestion and liver health.

**For a sweeter, tropical flavor, use orange juice instead of almond milk.

***A pinch of black pepper improves turmeric absorption, so include it with turmeric for best results.
