Bringing fresh, unexpected touches into simple areas is one of my favorite ways to refresh a room. Our kitchen overlooks the backyard through several windows, and in spring and summer the view is full of color from flowers, kids playing, and our chickens. Adding a small pop of color inside with potted flowers makes the space feel brighter and more welcoming.
This geometric planter project is inexpensive, simple, and doesn’t require advanced crafting skills. If you want an even easier version, you can skip the geometric detail and simply paint the pots with chalkboard paint for a clean, modern look.
Materials:
- Terracotta pots
- Chalkboard paint and regular craft paint
- Painters tape
- Gold paint pen
- Paint brushes
- Flowers
- Small shovel
- Dirt
Directions: Start by applying two coats of chalkboard paint to each terracotta pot, allowing the paint to dry fully between coats. Once the base is dry, use painter’s tape to create the geometric pattern you like—triangles are a simple and striking choice. Paint the taped areas with your craft paint; I applied one coat of white first, then two coats of a sea glass color mixed with white for depth. Remove the tape while the paint is still slightly tacky but not wet to keep the edges crisp.
After the colored triangles have dried, add definition using the gold paint pen. Place narrow strips of painters tape along the edges of the triangles as guides, then trace a line of gold paint. The lines do not need to be perfect; a slightly imperfect, hand-drawn look gives the pots character. Finish by outlining the bottom lip of each pot with the gold pen for a cohesive, polished detail.
Let all paint dry thoroughly before planting. Once dry, fill the pots with soil and arrange your chosen flowers. These planters look lovely grouped on a windowsill, island, or porch and bring a curated, modern touch to any space.
These handmade geometric planters also make thoughtful, creative gifts for friends and family—personalize the colors to suit the recipient and include a small potted plant for a ready-to-give present.
