With the holidays around the corner, handmade presents are a thoughtful, budget-friendly option. I love crafting gifts because they feel personal and show the time and care you put into each item. This season I decided to make beeswax candles scented with essential oils — simple to create, long-lasting, and free from artificial fragrances.

Homemade candles are a favorite of mine because they’re easy, customizable, and make lovely gifts. You can vary the scent, container, or label to match any recipient. For these candles I blended sweet orange, clove, and spruce essential oils for a warm winter citrus aroma that also works well in scrubs and body butters.

Homemade Candles with Essential Oils

To finish the candles I created printable watercolor gift tags and attached ribbon for a polished look. Using printable tags makes presentation quick and consistent — simply print on cardstock and trim. I used jars, but you can get creative with teacups or thrifted containers for a vintage feel.

Equipment

  • Printer
  • Scissors

Materials

  • 1 lb 4 cups beeswax pellets
  • candle wicks
  • essential oils sweet orange, clove, spruce
  • glass jars

Instructions

  • Pour 4 cups of beeswax pellets into a mason jar or heatproof measuring cup. Choose a container dedicated to crafting, as wax can be difficult to remove completely.
  • Melt the wax in the microwave in 2–3 minute increments, stirring between each interval until fully melted. This usually takes about 9 minutes total. If you prefer, melt the wax using a double boiler on the stove for gentler, controlled heat.
  • When the wax is fully melted, add essential oils. A suggested blend is 40 drops sweet orange, 10 drops spruce, and 5 drops clove. Adjust scents to your preference; keep oils balanced so they complement rather than overpower the wax.
  • Prepare your containers. I like glass Weck jars, but teacups and thrifted jars also work well for a unique look.
  • Attach the wicks: dip the metal tab of each wick into melted wax, press it into the center bottom of the jar, and hold until it sets. Wick stickers can help secure the tab if needed.
  • Stabilize the wicks by resting skewers or chopsticks across the jar rims and threading the wicks through them so they stay centered while the wax cools.
  • Carefully pour the scented wax into each jar. Leave a small gap at the top to avoid overflow. If you see air bubbles, allow the wax to cool slightly before pouring.
  • Let the candles fully harden for several hours. Once solid, remove the skewers and trim the wick to about 1/2 inch for a clean, even burn.
  • Finish with ribbon and a printable tag for gifting. Arrange candles in a small gift basket with bath salts or a hand-written note for a thoughtful, custom present.

Handmade candles make practical, meaningful gifts that are easy to personalize. For a special presentation, pair them with a small bundle of bath salts or a gift card. The result is a warm, thoughtful package that friends and family will appreciate.
