These gnomes are a fast, flexible craft perfect for adding a seasonal touch to a shelf, mantel, or table during October.

Why I Like This Project

  • Quick project. Each gnome takes under 10 minutes to assemble and is fun to make.
  • No-sew project. No sewing is required — minimal supplies and easy steps make this approachable for all ages. Any adult crew sock works well.
  • Printable template. A beard cutting template removes guesswork so you can quickly cut felt beards that look great every time.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Use mismatched socks. This project is perfect for mismatched pairs—look for seasonal patterned socks at big-box stores or dollar stores. You can use an ankle sock for the body but use a crew sock for the hat; the banded edge forms a neat finished hat rim. For a long, droopy hat, try a knee-high sock.
  2. Save leftovers. Cutting the hat sock leaves a foot portion you can save to make another gnome or a small accessory later.
  3. Choose felt for the beard. Felt is affordable, easy to work with, and widely available. One sheet can yield multiple beards, making it a better budget choice than faux fur for many crafters.

Supplies

two socks, scissors, bead, stuffing, rice, scissors
  • One solid adult crew or ankle sock for the gnome body.
  • One adult crew sock for the hat (crew socks work best).
  • Rice or dry beans to give the gnome weight so it stands upright. Use the jar method to fill the sock quickly.
  • Pillow stuffing (Polyfil) to top the rice for a soft upper portion. A mix of about two-thirds rice and one-third stuffing creates a balanced weight.
  • Hair ties or rubber bands to secure sock openings.
  • Wooden half bead, full bead, or pom pom for the nose; half beads sit flush and look tidy.
  • Felt for the beard; inexpensive and easy to cut.
  • Printable beard pattern to trace and cut consistent beards.
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue and hot glue gun for assembly.

Step 1: For a tall pointy hat, insert a pencil into the gnome body so it extends a few inches above the stuffing. Add a dot of hot glue around the pencil if desired.

Step 2: Slide the hat over the pencil and arrange it so the top is pointed against the pencil tip.

How To Make a Floppy Gnome Hat

Step 1: For a floppy hat, simply slide the sock hat onto the gnome and secure it with hot glue. Add a pom pom to the tip if you like. Note: floppy hats work best with regular socks rather than bulky fleece.

No Sew Sock Gnome FAQs

What can I use to make the gnome’s beard?

Faux fur looks cute, but white felt is an inexpensive and easy option that still creates a charming beard.

What socks work best for sock gnomes?

Adult crew socks work best because of their size. An ankle sock can serve as the body, but use a crew sock for the hat for a neat finished edge.
