How I Recharge: My Personal Rest and Energy Routine

Taking time to recharge is more important than ever. I used to be constantly on the go until illness forced me to reassess my priorities. I learned that when I care for myself first, I can better support others and show up as my best self.

Below are some of the practices I rely on to recharge and maintain balance.

How I Recharge:

  • I spend time alone. I used to struggle with FOMO and felt pressured to be everywhere. Now I welcome solitude because it’s when my best ideas surface and when I reconnect with what genuinely brings me joy. Being constantly around others can dilute your sense of self; time alone helps me remember who I am and what I want.
  • I prioritize rest. I aim for at least seven hours of sleep most nights. When I need to wake up early, I plan backward to make sure I’m in bed at a reasonable hour—even if that means leaving social events early. Sleep is foundational to how I function and feel.
  • I nourish my body with foods that make me feel good. Everyone’s needs differ, but for me, avoiding gluten, dairy, and soy helps me feel my best. I view food as fuel and choose what supports my energy and clarity.
  • I exercise. When I feel drained, movement often revitalizes me. Working out can seem counterintuitive when tired, but sweating and focusing on my body frequently leaves me more energized and centered.
  • I journal. Writing each night clears my mind. Capturing thoughts and worries on paper helps me process the day and sleep more peacefully, leaving me refreshed the next morning.
  • I avoid my phone first thing. I try not to check my phone until after my workout or gym session. If I scroll immediately upon waking, I often start the day feeling drained and distracted.
  • I do things that genuinely energize me. Simple rituals—like sitting in a sauna or taking myself out to lunch—sustain my wellbeing. Sometimes I need to intentionally make time for activities I know will help in the long run.
  • I schedule mindless, creative activities. Food photography is one of mine; it forces me to slow down, focus on a single task, and enjoy the present moment.
